Job Description
School Nurse Job Summary: The person in this role will be responsible to create a climate of health and well-being within the school environment. He/she will also function as a child advocate in areas of health and safety.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities generally include the following:
- Provides temporary and emergency care for sick and injured students or staff, according to school policy and procedures.
- Utilizes established nursing process to assess, analyze, plan, implement, record and evaluate all nursing care.
- Maintains accurate and complete school health records of all students.
- Conducts health screenings (vision and hearing) for the purpose of ensuring compliance with government mandated requirements, and notify parents of deficiencies and recommended follow up.
- Performs other screenings as needed, such as Pediculosis (lice/nits).
- Audits health records for immunization status of all students, and notifies parents of deficiencies and recommended immunizations.
- Completes state mandated annual reports (Immunization and Hearing Screening).
- Complies with the policies of the school, district, and state laws relative to the administration of medicine to students.
- Serves as a health advocate for students.
- Serves as a health liaison between school personnel, physicians, parents/guardians, and community, to ensure a healthy school environment.
- Maintains health care plans, medical emergency cards and other health records, for the purpose of providing information required by legal and professional standards.
- Participates in a variety of meetings, workshops and conferences, including IEP, for the purpose of sharing information and/or improving skills/knowledge.
- Reports students with contagious diseases to local public health authorities for the purpose of minimizing infection and complying with legal requirements.
- Identifies and reports suspected child abuse and neglect per applicable laws and school district policies.
- Identifies and reports suspected substance abuse and neglect per school district policies.
- Upholds professional standards, laws pertaining to health and/or nursing care and district policies.
- Becomes competent in the use of the school computer programs (Power School and SNAP).
- Performs other related duties, as assigned, for the purpose of ensuring the efficient and effective functioning of the school health department.
- Demonstrates understanding, patience, and tact with students, parents, teachers and administrators.
- Communicates with students, staff, and parents in regards to student's health.
- Establishes rapport with peers and school staff.
- Ability to manage a school nurse's office.
- Support school and district mission and vision.
- Utilizes effective verbal and written communication skills.
- Demonstrates flexibility, dependability, organization, and collaboration.
Qualifications: • Valid Arizona Professional Registered Nursing License
• A.A. Degree in Nursing or BS in Nursing from Regionally accredited
College or University
• School Nursing, Pediatric or Public Health Nursing Experience desired
(3 Years)
• Experience with Student Assessments
• Knowledge of State and Federal laws and regulations pertaining to the
care of children in the school environment
• Current American Red Cross CPR/First Aid Certified or within 90 days of
employment
• Hearing Screening Certified preferred
• Valid Arizona Driver's License
• Maintain confidentiality regarding student, staff and District
information
• Pass a background clearance and fingerprint check.
Terms of Employment: • 10 Month Contract
