Job Description

Position Overview:

The Commercial Loans Officer is a fully on-site position responsible for originating, analyzing, structuring, and closing commercial loan transactions while maintaining compliance with internal lending policies and external regulatory requirements. The role focuses on developing and managing a portfolio of commercial lending relationships while delivering high-quality service to business clients. This position collaborates closely with underwriters, processors, and senior management to advance the credit unions operational goals in lending and risk management.

Key Responsibilities:

1. Loan Origination & Relationship Development

  • Proactively identify, establish, and maintain strong relationships with commercial clients and prospects.
  • Conduct in-depth financial and risk assessments to determine the creditworthiness of potential borrowers.
  • Recommend and structure loan solutions tailored to meet the unique needs of each business while managing potential risks.

2. Credit Analysis & Structuring Loans

  • Analyze financial statements, business plans, tax returns, cash flow documents, and other records to assess borrower financial strength.
  • Prepare and present detailed loan proposals and reports, ensuring recommendations align with underwriting standards.
  • Apply sound judgment to ensure proposed loan structures comply with regulatory requirements and credit union policies.

3. Loan Closing & Documentation Support

  • Partner with loan processors and underwriters to ensure all closing conditions and documentation are in place.
  • Review legal and financial documents to verify adherence to approved loan terms before closing.
  • Facilitate an efficient and accurate loan closing process.

4. Portfolio Management

  • Oversee the performance of the assigned loan portfolio, ensuring ongoing monitoring, financial covenant compliance, and prompt recognition of potential financial deterioration.
  • Conduct periodic reviews and re-assessments of loans to maintain updated risk profiles.

5. Client Consultation & Expertise

  • Act as a trusted financial advisor, providing consultative services to clients throughout the life cycle of the loan.
  • Advise business clients on structuring financial solutions to support their growth and success.

6. Regulation & Compliance

  • Ensure strict adherence to all applicable laws and regulations, including but not limited to BSA/AML, OFAC, and other commercial lending standards.
  • Effectively implement and follow internal loan policies to maintain compliance and mitigate risk.

7. Collaboration with Internal Teams

  • Work in coordination with teams such as underwriting, operations, legal, and senior leadership to support lending strategies and goals.

8. Community and Business Engagement

  • Represent the credit union at business and community events, building visibility and expanding the organizations potential commercial loan base.

Essential Functions:

  • Identify and manage commercial lending opportunities while evaluating risk effectively.
  • Perform financial analysis to make sound, data-driven lending decisions.
  • Develop and foster long-term client relationships through strong communication and advisory skills.
  • Maintain a commitment to compliance with all relevant lending laws, industry regulations, and internal policies.

Qualifications and Experience:

Education:

  • Bachelors degree in Finance, Business Administration, Accounting, or a related field required.

Experience:

  • Minimum of 6 years of experience in commercial lending, credit analysis, or business banking.
  • Extensive background working with small and mid-sized businesses across diverse industries preferred.
  • Experience in underwriting or portfolio management is a strong plus.

Knowledge Requirements:

  • In-depth understanding of commercial loan products, financial statements, credit analysis, and risk assessment methodologies.
  • Familiarity with federal and state banking regulatory requirements, as well as internal credit union policies.

Skills & Abilities:

  • Strong analytical skills with expertise in financial modeling and risk evaluation.
  • Excellent communication and relationship management abilities, employing a consultative approach.
  • Proficient in using loan origination systems, Microsoft Office Suite, and other relevant technology tools.
  • Ability to work independently, efficiently manage portfolios, and meet deadlines under minimal supervision.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills with attention to detail.
